Understanding Leather Finishes
A leather finish refers to the surface treatment applied to the grain side of the hide. It can affect the leather’s colour, texture, sheen and how it ages over time.
The finish is different from the animal type (e.g. buffalo or cowhide) and the leather grade (e.g. full-grain or top-grain). The same type and grade of leather can be finished in different ways.
HOW FINISHES CHANGE THE CHARACTER OF LEATHER
Aniline Leather
The most natural expression.
Aniline leather is coloured with transparent dyes without a heavy pigmented surface coating. This allows the natural grain, pores and markings of the hide to remain clearly visible.
Semi-Aniline Leather
Natural, with added protection.
Semi-aniline leather retains the natural appearance of aniline leather while adding a light protective finish. It offers more consistency and resistance to everyday wear.
Pull-Up Leather
Made to change with use.
Pull-up leather is enriched with oils or waxes that shift beneath the surface when bent or stretched. This creates natural variations in tone and a distinctive lived-in look.
Pigmented Leather
Designed for consistency.
Pigmented leather has a coloured surface coating that creates a more uniform appearance and provides greater protection against scratches, stains and everyday wear.
Nubuck & Suede
Texture with a softer character.
NUBUCK
Nubuck is buffed on the grain side to create a fine, velvety texture. Suede is created from the softer underside of the hide for a soft, napped surface.
Nubuck and Suede: Surface Texture Explained
Nubuck Leather
Created by lightly buffing the grain side of the hide to produce a soft, velvety surface. Nubuck retains the natural grain structure but has a napped, matte finish.
Suede Leather
Usually made from the flesh side or split layer of the hide. It has a softer, more open fibre structure with a consistent napped surface.
How to Choose a Leather Finish
The right finish depends on your priorities, intended use and the look you prefer.
Natural Appearance
Choose aniline or semi-aniline if you prefer visible grain and natural character.
Consistent Look
Choose pigmented leather if you prefer a more uniform appearance.
Everyday Use
A light or full surface finish can offer added resistance to marks and wear.
Care Preference
Natural finishes usually require more care, while pigmented finishes are generally easier to maintain.
